M&A Advisor Search Guide

Guide to searching legal and financial M&A Advisors on Mergr

Updated over a week ago

The M&A advisor search interface is designed to filter legal and financial advisors. As transactions are added to the Mergr database, advisors listed as part of the deal are linked to the buyer, seller, or target.

Where to Access

You can quickly access the M&A Advisor Search interface from the Mergr Dashboard, as well as the Menu tray.

M&A Advisors Search

There are 2 principal categories of criteria on Mergr to help users filter and search M&A advisors. These include,

  • Advisor-Specific Criteria (blue below) - Search and filter based on advisor criteria (such as size or location).

  • M&A Advisory Criteria (orange below) - Search and filter based on advisory activity.

Tip: To view all advisor search options (as shown below), be sure to expand the default search menu by selecting 'More Options'.

Advisor Criteria

1. Investment Bank vs Law Firm

By default, the Advisors search section lists both financial and legal advisors together. If you'd like to focus one type of advisor, you can check the appropriate box here.

2. Keyword

The Keyword field looks up advisors by name or description. If there's a specific advisor that you're interested in, you can enter the name here.

3. Size

We tag both investment banks and law firms by size. Given larger advisors work on bigger deals and smaller advisors work on smaller transactions, this criteria can be helpful in locating firms that represent the deal size that you're looking for.

For investment banks, our size breakdown includes,

  • Bulge Bracket (largest)

  • Large

  • Middle-Market

  • Boutique

  • Broker (smallest)

For law firms, our size breakdown includes,

  • Mega (global, with many offices)

  • Mid-sized (regional, some offices)

  • Boutique (small, perhaps one office)

4. City, State/Province, Country

Look-up and build lists of advisors by City, US State/Canadian Province, and/or Country. For State/Province and Country, you can select multiple options to expand your search.

Search Tip: You can expand the list of cities you wish to search by adding the 'OR' search parameter between cities. For example, to look-up advisors in 'San Francisco', 'Oakland', and 'Menlo Park', enter 'San Francisco OR Oakland OR Menlo Park' in the City search field.

M&A Advisory Criteria

The M&A Advisory Activity section helps you filter advisors based on the deals the advisor has completed. If you're looking to filter for advisors that have done a specific engagement - based on sector, location, or size of the target company involved - applying criteria from this section will help you quickly build a list.

5. Represented Buyer, Represented Seller

We attach advisors to their specific client in a deal - if you wish to broadly identify advisors that represented the target, or target's seller in a transaction, select Represented Seller. If you wish to identify advisors that represented the acquirer in a transaction, select Represented Buyer.

6. Keyword

The Keyword field looks up target companies by their names and the content contained in their Mergr descriptions. This field can be particularly helpful if you're trying to find advisors that have worked with hyper-niche companies where choosing a sector may be too broad a category.

7. Sector

For general filtering of Target companies by industry - select from the Sector dropdown. Every company is assigned to one of 61 sectors. Select more than one sector at a time to expand your search to multiple industries.

8. Deal Value

If you'd like to build a list of advisors that have worked on certain sizes of transactions, you can select from the various size categories here. Please note however that most transactions in the Mergr database do not have deal sizes that have been disclosed.

9. Location, City, State/Province, Country

If you'd like to filter advisors based on Target company location, you can select from the various location based search options.

Search Tip: You can expand the list of cities you wish to search by adding the 'OR' search parameter between cities. For example, to look-up companies in 'San Francisco', 'Oakland', and 'Menlo Park', enter 'San Francisco OR Oakland OR Menlo Park' in the City search field.

10. Within Past 2 Years

If you're looking for advisors that have more recently been engaged on transactions, check the Within Past 2 Years checkbox when searching. Selecting this criteria will limit results to those that have worked on engagements in the past 2 years.

Advisor Results

Viewing

The Advisor Search Results table is designed to show you advisor attributes, such as location and advisor type, as well as client and deal activity summaries.

Sorting

After doing an advisor search (and by default when loading the search page), results are sorted by total Advisory Count Last 5 Years - High to Low. Advisory count is the sum of all M&A deals that we have linked an advisor to (according to the info we have in the Mergr database).

All sort options include,

  • Advisor Name - A to Z

  • Advisor Name - Z to A

  • Advisory Count YTD - High to Low

  • Advisory Count Last 5 years - High to Low (default)

  • Client Count Investors - High to Low

  • Client Count Corporates - High to Low

  • Buy-side Engagement - Most Recent Date First

  • Sell-side Engagement - Most Recent Date First

Downloading

You can download your search results by selecting Download at the top of the search results table.

Selecting 'Download' will export the first 250 results of your search via a CSV file. If your search contains more than 250 results, results beyond the first 250 records will not be included.

Click here to view the list of available fields when exporting advisors.

Note: The Download function is disabled during the free trial period and is automatically enabled after the free trial period ends. If you select 'Download' during your trial, you will be prompted to end your trial and upgrade to a paid membership.
