Guide to searching transactions on Mergr

Updated over a week ago

Transactions in the Mergr database serve as the connections between Companies, Investors, and Advisors. We seek to capture as much deal info as is publicly available - and look to add recent and historical activity.

Note: Our focus at Mergr is capturing late stage financings as well as outright acquisitions - we do not collect angel, early stage, or venture (Series A, B, etc.) transactions.

Where to Access

You can quickly access the Transaction Search interface from the Mergr Dashboard, as well as the Menu tray.

Transaction Search

There are several categories of criteria to help users filter and search transactions.

These include,

  • Transaction Criteria (blue below) - Search and filter M&A events based on deal-specific criteria (such as transaction type, size, and date).

  • Target Criteria (orange below) - Search transactions based on the target company involved.

  • Buyer Criteria (green below) - Search transactions based on type of buyer and where located.

  • Seller Criteria (red below) - Search transactions based on type of seller and where located.

  • Has Advisors (purple below) - Search transactions where there are financial or legal M&A advisors involved.

  • Press Releases (black below) - Keyword search transactions based on content in associated M&A press announcements.

Transaction Criteria

1. Invest Situation

We categorize each transaction entered into the Mergr database by deal situation. If you're interested in a particular investment situation, such as Divestitures, Buyouts, or Add-on Acquisitions, select from the choices in the 'Invest Situation' dropdown.

2. Exit Situation

If there is a 'Seller' for a transaction, we also categorize the situation for the entity that may be exiting their investment. Example situations include Secondary Sale, IPO, Divestiture, Merger, and more. Select from the Exit Situation dropdown if you would like to segment transactions based on this criteria.

Click here for explanations on each Invest and Exit transaction type.

3. Month/Year

Add time conditions by selecting from the Year and Month dropdowns.

4. Deal Value

Filter for Deals based on size by selecting from the Deal Value dropdown.

Note on Deal Values: Most deals do not have deal values and so selecting from the Deal Value dropdown may significantly reduce your list size. We can only add deal values if they have been publicly disclosed.

Target Criteria

5. Keyword

The Keyword search field looks up target companies by their Mergr description. If you're trying to identify specific types of companies, the Keyword field can be helpful.

6. Sector

Use the Sector dropdown to filter Target companies by industry. Choose multiple sectors to broaden your set of search results.

7. City

Filter deals by a Target's City.

Tip: You can expand the list of cities by adding the 'OR' search parameter between cities. For example, to look-up target companies in 'San Francisco', 'Oakland', and 'Menlo Park', enter 'San Francisco OR Oakland OR Menlo Park' in the City search field.

8. State / Province

Look-up and build lists of target companies by US State or Canadian Province. Select multiple options to expand your search.

9. Country

Look-up and build lists of target companies by Country. You can select multiple options to expand your search.

10. Revenue

Filter target companies by various Revenue ranges.

Note on Revenues: Most companies in the Mergr database do not have revenue figures. Use this field selectively as it will drastically reduce your number of results.

Buyer Criteria

11. Buyer Type

You can isolate transactions by category of buyer. These include Private Equity Firms and Companies. For companies, you can further filter based on current ownership status.

12. Buyer Location

You can filter transactions by buyer location.

Seller Criteria

13. Seller Type

You can isolate transactions by category of seller. These include Private Equity Firms and Companies. For companies, you can further filter based on current ownership status.

14. Seller Location

You can filter transactions by seller location seller.

Has Advisors

15. Advisors

You can filter transactions based on if an M&A advisor (legal and/or financial) were involved.

Press Releases

16. Keyword Press Releases

We capture the contents of M&A press announcements. Use this field to filter transactions by keywords that appear in these announcements.

Results

Viewing

Transaction results are organized to quickly show details of the transaction itself, as well as the target, buyer, and/or seller involved - in one view.

Target Details

Snapshot of the target company involved, including business description, sector, and location. If the target had M&A advisors involved, these will be listed below the target details.

Transaction Details

Transaction details include date, transaction type, and deal value.

Note on Valuations: If Revenue and EBITDA for a transaction has been disclosed, we will capture this info and calculate/show valuation multiples. If deal values or valuation multiples are not shown, this info wasn't publicly disclosed.

Buyer & Seller Details

Snapshot of both the acquirer/investor and/or seller. If the buyer or seller had M&A advisors involved, these will be listed below the buyer and seller details.

M&A Announcement

We do our best to capture the original source links as well as press announcements for transactions. Select 'Deal Article' to view the article inside Mergr, select 'Deal Link' to open the URL of the announcement.

Sorting

There are a variety of ways to sort transactions. By default, results are sorted based on the transaction date, most recent transaction first.

Additional sort options include,

  • Target Name - A to Z

  • Target Name - Z to A

  • Deal Value - High to Low

Saving

For faster recall later - you can save your transaction searches.

Step 1: Select the 'Save Search' button at the top of the search results table.

Step 2: Enter a name for your search and select 'Save Search'.

Step 3: Saved searches appear on your Dashboard under 'Saved Searches'.

Downloading

You can download your search results by selecting 'Download' at the top of the search results table.

Selecting 'Download' will export the first 250 results of your search via a CSV file. If your search contains more than 250 results, results beyond the first 250 records will not be included. Transaction fields available for export can be viewed and modified as needed by selecting the down arrow next to 'Download'.

Click here to view a list of available fields when exporting transactions.

Note: The 'Download' function is disabled during the free trial period and is automatically enabled after the free trial period ends. If you select 'Download' during your trial, you will be prompted to end your trial and upgrade to a paid membership.

The additional tabs include,
