How to Find Investment Banks Active in a Specific Sector

Surface every investment bank that has advised on deals matching a chosen sector — for sell-side or buy-side mandate prep, banker league-table building, vendor target lists, and IC reference

Why this search matters

Choosing or scoping investment banks works best when you start from track record, not reputation. A bank with five software exits in the last two years is a more credible pitch.

Use this search for:

  • Sell-side mandate prep — see the natural pitch competitors in your sector + size band before sending RFPs.

  • Buy-side advisor selection — find banks with real track record on deals like the one you're pursuing.

  • Banker league-table building — generate a custom league table for any sector / size / geography slice.

  • BD outreach for vendors — service providers selling to investment banks (R&W insurance, due-diligence consultants, deal-tech vendors, virtual data rooms) can use this to build a high-intent target list of the banks actually closing deals in the relevant slice.

  • Recruiting and competitive intel — banks consistently appearing in a sector + size slice are the ones with the deal flow and likely the hiring need.

Step 1

Open the M&A Advisors Search page.

Step 2

Once on the search, select More Options to expand the full filter set.

Step 3

Check the Investment Bank box under Advisor Type. Leave Law Firm unchecked (unless you also want legal advisors in the same view).

Under Target Company, select your sector (e.g., Software) from the Sector dropdown.

Click Search.

Step 4

Results show every investment bank that has advised on at least one Software transaction, regardless of whether the bank represented the buyer, the seller, or the target.

Additional filters to try

  • Add Law Firm to the Advisor Type checkboxes to see legal and financial advisors in the same slice — useful for full-stack mandate prep.

  • Add a Country or Size filter (e.g., United Kingdom, Boutique) to narrow geographically and by firm size.

  • Add a Year range filter to isolate the active window (last 3 years tells a different story than lifetime).

  • Pick multiple sectors (e.g., Software + IT) to widen into adjacent industries.

Going further

  • For a specific target you're advising on or searching deals for — use Advisor Match to rank likely competing banks (and law firms) by full track record, not just one slice.

  • For one specific company's incumbent advisors across its full ownership history — see the Advisor Relationships tab in Ownership Graph.

  • For the always-on ranked version of this universe — see RankingsInvestment Bank tab, with sector and deal-size filters applied.
